Hope Springs Eternal - installation, dimensions variable, wood ash, stem taken from bouquet of Oriental Lilies, soil, plastic plant pot.

My own photographs (above) + Photographs courtesy of Embassy Gallery, Edinburgh (below)

Hope Springs Eternal, was an installation I made for “Solo Show” at Embassy Gallery, Edinburgh. The show took the form of an open invitation to display work, literally an invitation to your own solo show. My work featured alongside 15 other artists, on what was a turn based premise, you turn up, install your work, document it, critique the work, then you’re congratulated, have your photo taken and finally a poster to take away with you. “Solo Show” was held at Embassy Gallery, 10B Broughton Street Lane, Edinburgh for one day only on 15/06/19 11am - 6pm.

This piece came out about through a flourishing interest in Ikebana, a Japanese form of flower arrangement, and the intertwined relationship between ash and storytelling/memories. Ikebana for the delicate hidden meaning behind each arrangement - Ash for the personal associations combined with the interpersonal. Also just the image of something “pretty” emerging from something “ugly” was appealing to me, something nice emerging from something not, hope prevails it springs eternal within me.
